IN PLAIN ENGLISH

What this term means in practice

A complete set commonly explains assets, liabilities, equity, income, expenses, cash flows, changes in equity and material accounting policies or notes. The exact form depends on the applicable standard, legal form, authority, purpose and reporting period.

Financial statements are not a raw ledger export. They require closing entries, reconciliations, estimates, classification, presentation and review. They may support Corporate Tax, banking, investors and audit, but each user can require additional schedules or adjustments.

01 · WHY IT MATTERS

The operational consequence behind the definition

Corporate Tax generally starts from accounting information, while companies, authorities, lenders and auditors may rely on period-end statements for different purposes. A clean trial balance can still produce misleading statements if cut-off, related parties, impairment or classification are wrong.

Management remains responsible for the records and statements even when accounting is outsourced. Audit, where required, is a separate independent engagement and does not transfer management's responsibility.

02 · KEY ELEMENTS

The points that must be tested

01

Statement of financial position

Presents recognised assets, liabilities and equity at the reporting date.

02

Performance statement

Explains income and expenses for the period using the applicable presentation.

03

Cash-flow information

Reconciles operating, investing and financing cash movements where required or prepared.

04

Changes and notes

Explain equity movements, policies, judgements, related parties, commitments and material details.

05

Closing evidence

Support balances with bank, receivable, payable, asset, tax and intercompany reconciliations.

06

Framework and purpose

Identify the applicable accounting standard, legal requirement and intended user before preparation.

Similar words can lead to different legal or tax outcomes

NOT THE SAME AS

Trial balance

A trial balance lists ledger balances; financial statements classify and explain them under a reporting framework.

NOT THE SAME AS

Management accounts

Management accounts are internal and flexible; financial statements serve a defined external or statutory purpose.

NOT THE SAME AS

Tax return

A Corporate Tax return uses accounting results but applies statutory adjustments and is not itself a set of accounts.

04 · PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A trading company prepares year-end accounts

FACTS

The ledger balances, but inventory counts are incomplete, intercompany balances disagree and several customer receipts remain unallocated.

ANALYSIS

The company should complete evidence, reconcile balances, assess cut-off and estimates, record approved adjustments and only then prepare statements and tax working files.

MISSING FACTS

Legal form, authority, accounting framework, audit status, inventory method, materiality and tax period determine the final package.

Illustrative only. This is not a client result, legal conclusion or automatic tax treatment.

05 · FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions that change the analysis

01Are financial statements the same as a trial balance?

No. The trial balance is an input; statements classify, present and explain balances under an applicable framework.

02Must every UAE entity use identical statements?

No. Legal form, authority, applicable standard, tax status, size and purpose can change requirements.

03Does an audit prepare the statements?

Management is responsible for the statements. An independent auditor examines them under the audit engagement and applicable rules.

04Can financial statements be prepared from bank statements alone?

Normally not reliably. Receivables, payables, assets, accruals, equity, related parties and non-cash items also require records.

05How do they connect to Corporate Tax?

Accounting income is normally a starting point, then tax law requires documented adjustments, elections and disclosures.

06What evidence should support them?

Ledgers, invoices, contracts, bank and balance reconciliations, asset records, estimates, approvals and related-party schedules are typical inputs.
