IN PLAIN ENGLISH

What this term means in practice

An audit is not bookkeeping cleanup or management approval. Management prepares the records, statements, estimates and representations; an appropriately authorised independent auditor plans procedures, evaluates evidence and issues the report within the engagement scope.

Whether an audit is required depends on legal form, licensing authority, regulator, constitutional documents, financing, tax status and other facts. A rule for one Free Zone or regulated sector should not be presented as universal across the UAE.

01 · WHY IT MATTERS

The operational consequence behind the definition

Audit readiness reduces disruption but cannot guarantee an unmodified opinion. Reconciliations, confirmations, contracts, inventory evidence, related-party schedules, estimates and governance approvals must exist before the auditor can evaluate them.

MP Elites may support the close, PBC coordination and evidence pack, but does not claim to be the statutory auditor or issue an audit opinion. Auditor independence and professional judgement must remain intact.

02 · KEY ELEMENTS

The points that must be tested

01

Independent auditor

Confirm registration, eligibility, independence and authority acceptance for the specific engagement.

02

Reporting framework

Identify the financial statements and accounting criteria being audited.

03

Audit scope

Define entity, period, materiality, locations, components and report purpose.

04

Evidence

Provide complete ledgers, reconciliations, contracts, confirmations, estimates and governance records.

05

Management responsibility

Management owns the accounts, controls, information, judgements and representations.

06

Opinion and findings

The auditor reports under the applicable standards; adjustments and control observations require management response.

03 · DO NOT CONFUSE

Similar words can lead to different legal or tax outcomes

NOT THE SAME AS

Accounting

Accounting prepares records and statements; audit independently examines them.

NOT THE SAME AS

Audit support

Readiness and coordination help management respond but do not provide assurance or the opinion.

NOT THE SAME AS

Review engagement

A review may provide a different, generally lower assurance level and is not automatically interchangeable with an audit.

04 · PRACTICAL EXAMPLE

A Free Zone company receives an audit request

FACTS

The entity has two years of accounts, unreconciled related-party balances and no signed inventory count records.

ANALYSIS

First confirm the authority requirement and eligible auditor, then close the books, reconcile schedules, preserve evidence and provide the auditor a controlled PBC pack.

MISSING FACTS

Authority, legal form, period, reporting framework, inventory, materiality and auditor instructions determine the work.

Illustrative only. This is not a client result, legal conclusion or automatic tax treatment.

05 · FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions that change the analysis

01Does every UAE company require an audit?

Not under one universal rule. Check legal form, authority, regulator, constitutional documents, tax status and contractual obligations.

02Can MP Elites sign the audit report?

MP Elites does not claim to act as the statutory auditor. The eligible independent auditor controls the audit and opinion.

03Does a clean trial balance ensure a clean opinion?

No. Evidence, estimates, disclosures, controls, scope limitations and applicable standards also matter.

04What is a PBC list?

It is the auditor's requested evidence list. Management should assign owners, versions and reconciliations for each item.

05Can audit support negotiate away findings?

No. Support can clarify facts and evidence, while the independent auditor retains professional judgement.

06When should readiness begin?

Before year end where possible, especially for inventory, confirmations, valuations, related parties and new reporting requirements.
