UAE GLOSSARY
Corporate Tax Return
A Corporate Tax Return is the Taxable Person’s period-specific self-assessment of taxable income, adjustments, reliefs, credits and tax payable submitted to the FTA.
IN PLAIN ENGLISH
What this term means in practice
The return begins with reliable accounting information but is not a copy of the profit and loss account. Exempt income, deductions, losses, elections, Free Zone treatment, Related Parties, Connected Persons and foreign tax credits may require documented adjustments and schedules.
Registration, return and payment are distinct. A company can have a filing obligation even when no tax is payable. Only an approved Tax Group files as a single Taxable Person; common ownership alone does not combine entities.
01 · WHY IT MATTERS
The operational consequence behind the definition
The return is a formal self-assessment that management should be able to trace from source records through financial statements and the tax computation to each filed field.
Unsupported elections or QFZP assumptions can affect future periods. The filed package should preserve approvals, workings and the law applied at the relevant date.
02 · KEY ELEMENTS
The points that must be tested
Taxable Person and period
Validate entity, branches, group status, registration and financial year.
Accounting income
Reconcile trial balance, financial statements and closing adjustments.
Tax adjustments
Support exemptions, deductions, restrictions, losses, reliefs and credits.
Free Zone position
Test current QFZP conditions and classify each relevant income stream.
Related parties
Map controlled transactions, Connected Persons, pricing and disclosures.
Filing and payment
Approve, submit, retain acknowledgement and reconcile any tax paid.
03 · DO NOT CONFUSE
Similar words can lead to different legal or tax outcomes
Corporate Tax registration
Creates the administrative profile but is not the annual self-assessment.
VAT return
Reports transaction tax under separate registration and periods.
Financial statements
Provide the accounting basis; tax law then requires adjustments.
04 · PRACTICAL EXAMPLE
A Free Zone company files its first return
It has service income, owner remuneration, overseas contractors and expects QFZP treatment.
Close the accounts, test QFZP conditions, classify income, review Connected Persons and TP, document deductions and reconcile the computation to the return.
Tax period, audit status, activities, counterparties, substance, agreements and elections determine the final position.
Illustrative only. This is not a client result, legal conclusion or automatic tax treatment.
| Concept | Operational meaning | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Financial statements | Present accounting performance and position. | They do not contain every tax adjustment. |
| Tax computation | Bridge accounting income to taxable income and tax due. | It supports the filed fields. |
| Tax return | Formal submission to the FTA. | It must match approved workings and evidence. |
