UAE VAT QUESTIONS
VAT FAQ
UAE VAT follows supplies, imports and evidence rather than business profit. The correct answer depends on the goods or services, supplier and recipient establishments, place and time of supply, registration status and documents. Standard-rated, zero-rated, exempt and outside-scope treatments have different legal and input-recovery consequences.

What should you know about registration and grouping?
Registration uses rolling tests and different rules for residents and non-residents.
01When is UAE VAT registration mandatory?+
A UAE-resident business generally registers when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the previous 12 months or are expected to exceed it in the next 30 days. Non-residents use a different rule where no UAE person accounts for the tax.
Facts that change the answer: residence, taxable supplies, imports, rolling history, supported forecast, reverse-charge responsibility and legal person.
Application note: Apply the answer to the actual contract, supply chain, establishments, tax point, invoice and retained evidence under the current VAT Law and FTA guidance.
Evidence file: For the decision file, retain the source documents, calculations, authority correspondence, approvals and accounting entries that support the position. The written explanation and actual conduct should remain consistent.
02When is voluntary VAT registration available?+
A resident business may apply when taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500 under the current tests. Approval requires evidence and does not make previously exempt activity taxable.
Facts that change the answer: residence, supply and expense values, 12-month history, 30-day forecast, evidence and intended business activity.
03Do zero-rated supplies count toward registration?+
Zero-rated supplies are taxable supplies and generally enter registration analysis. Exempt income and outside-scope amounts are different and should not be added without a legal basis.
Facts that change the answer: transaction classification, place of supply, export evidence, imports, one-off disposals and entity aggregation.
Application note: Apply the answer to the actual contract, supply chain, establishments, tax point, invoice and retained evidence under the current VAT Law and FTA guidance.

04Can related companies register as one VAT group?+
Eligible UAE-established related legal persons can apply for FTA approval. A VAT group is one taxable person and creates joint responsibility; it is not the same as a Corporate Tax Group.
Facts that change the answer: establishment, control, legal persons, historic liabilities, systems, intercompany flows and FTA approval.
Application note: Apply the answer to the actual contract, supply chain, establishments, tax point, invoice and retained evidence under the current VAT Law and FTA guidance.

05Does a trade licence determine VAT registration?+
No. VAT can apply to a person conducting business even where licensing facts are different. The taxable-supply and import tests, residence and responsibility for tax control.
Facts that change the answer: person, activity, supplies, imports, registration history, licence facts and responsible party.
Application note: Apply the answer to the actual contract, supply chain, establishments, tax point, invoice and retained evidence under the current VAT Law and FTA guidance.

SECTION 02
What should you know about rates and transaction treatment?
Every non-standard treatment needs a specific legal basis and evidence.
06What is the current UAE VAT standard rate?+
The current standard rate is 5%. It applies where a taxable supply is within UAE VAT and no zero-rate or exemption provision applies. Rate is considered after place and time of supply.
Facts that change the answer: supply type, supplier and recipient establishments, place, tax point, zero-rate conditions, exemptions and evidence.
07What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt?+
Both may show no output VAT, but zero-rated supplies remain taxable and can support input recovery, while exempt supplies can restrict it. The statutory category and evidence decide the result.
Facts that change the answer: goods or service, customer and location, legal category, business use, evidence and partial-exemption position.
Application note: Apply the answer to the actual contract, supply chain, establishments, tax point, invoice and retained evidence under the current VAT Law and FTA guidance.

Application note: Apply the answer to the actual contract, supply chain, establishments, tax point, invoice and retained evidence under the current VAT Law and FTA guidance.
